Thankful for Urban Ministries of Durham!

As I woke up this Thanksgiving morning in my warm and safe home my thoughts and prayers drifted to those that are less fortunate than us. It is cold, dark and rainy outside today. This is a popular day to volunteer so there will be many meals and lots of hope given out today. Thank you!

I took a tour of Urban Ministries of Durham last week and hoped to post this before today but life got in the way. I have volunteered, given clothing, my time and money to Urban Ministries in the past years but I had never walked through the shelter. It was a humbling experience as always and I'm so thankful for the wonderful staff and all the volunteers. I'm so happy for the new look that provides a warmer welcome to all.

I've decided to do a Thankful Series because I need this and think the world does too. Please let me know if you want to share some positive news and be proactive in making a change. Take a look at this quick video of Bryan Gilmer sharing his thoughts on being thankful and the current needs of Urban Ministries of Durham.

Reflections from my last 96 hours...

This morning I woke up completely inspired and full of gratitude by the last 96 hours of my life. If we have met,  you probably already know that I'm passionate about many things and life, my relationships, spirituality, health, working hard as a Realtor and my love for Durham top the long list.

In the past 4 days, I was privileged to volunteer at The Full Frame Documentary Festival, meet other amazing volunteers that are film lovers, had conversations with Film Makers from around the world, participated in discussions on the variety of topics, viewed 6 mind provoking films and juggled my business during Spring Market.

To say I had a Blast would be an understatement. I was totally consumed by the range of emotions that I experienced. I was elated by joy and overwhelmed the raw truth at other times. The conversations were heart felt and I honestly believe that I experienced personal growth while being immersed with strangers that share a common interest.

This experience was a much needed reminder that I need to refocus myself. That relationships and new opportunities add so much value to my life. I also realized that the clients I want to work with will respect my time and be flexible around my commitments.

Is it PEE-CAN or PA-KAWN?

The holidays are always a time to share love, good memories and good food! The smell of pecans cooking is something that everyone should experience. I remember my Mom toasting nuts in butter for pies, dips, dressing and main dishes. I can smell them now just thinking about it.

Today, I just learned a helpful tip to prevent odors when cooking Collards, Turnips and Mustard (I actually like the scent but many complain). Place a pecan in the pot to absorb the odor and then discard the nut before serving. I was so excited to hear this little tip that I had to share it.

I hope your Thanksgiving will be full of whatever you need! I'm thankful for you being in my life and supporting my efforts to blog about things that I'm passionate about all year long.

Go for the GOLD! ;)

Please meet Ashley Hodge! She recently purchased a home and is taking a moment to say Thank You!
