Thankful for Urban Ministries of Durham!

As I woke up this Thanksgiving morning in my warm and safe home my thoughts and prayers drifted to those that are less fortunate than us. It is cold, dark and rainy outside today. This is a popular day to volunteer so there will be many meals and lots of hope given out today. Thank you!

I took a tour of Urban Ministries of Durham last week and hoped to post this before today but life got in the way. I have volunteered, given clothing, my time and money to Urban Ministries in the past years but I had never walked through the shelter. It was a humbling experience as always and I'm so thankful for the wonderful staff and all the volunteers. I'm so happy for the new look that provides a warmer welcome to all.

I've decided to do a Thankful Series because I need this and think the world does too. Please let me know if you want to share some positive news and be proactive in making a change. Take a look at this quick video of Bryan Gilmer sharing his thoughts on being thankful and the current needs of Urban Ministries of Durham.

What is happening at Urban Ministries of Durham?

The past week has been dark and gloomy with all of the rain and dark skies.  I visited Urban Ministries of Durham to catch up and make a donation.  I made a commitment to donate $100 every time I sell a home. When I was leaving in my dry car and going to eat a hot cooked meal at a restaurant and go to work in a warm dry office... It just puts things into perspective.  I'm always thinking of ways I can help and you can too. Take a look at the video for their current needs.

Buying groceries tomorrow can help others...

Tuesday, April 23, is 5% day at Whole Foods Market in Durham. The store will donate 5% of the day's sales to help people in need through Urban Ministries of Durham. The more people we can get to shop there on Tuesday, the larger the gift will be. So please plan to come yourself, and forward this to all your friends. Members of our board and senior staff will be there to say hi and tell folks about how we help.

Empty Bowls 2013

It is that time of year again and you don't want to miss this lineup. Thank you Bryan Gilmer, Director of Marketing and Development at Urban Ministries of Durham for keeping us updated on the event.

You'll sample soups prepared by more than a dozen local restaurants and vote for your favorites. Local artists and artisans are donating hundreds of hand-crafted bowls, and you'll have the chance to select one to take one home. The evening will feature a live jazz combo and celebrity soup judges.

Panty Raid...

Wikipedia: Panty raids were the first college craze after World War II, following the 1930s crazes of goldfish swallowing or seeing how many could fit in a phone booth.

Now that I have your attention...stay with me. I recently visited Urban Durham Ministries  and was able to leave some Go Gives Back money and coats that were collected. Did you know that Go Realty gave $37,400.00+ to charities in The Triangle during 2012? Curious of how that works? Read my previous blog Go Realty+Agents=Happy Community and support me as an agent.

During my visit I asked what Urban Ministries needed and was told women's underwear. So once again I'm asking for your support on their behalf. Call me and I will pick up you donations and deliver them for you. No excuses and in this case gently used is not acceptable.

Urban Ministries Food Pantry

Please help if you are able. I will pick up the items and deliver them for you. Just contact me to arrange.

The Power of Facebook and Kindness!

Never underestimate the Power of Facebook and Kindness. A few weeks ago Urban Ministries of Durham posted a need for men's clothing on their Facebook page. I simply shared the idea and even agreed to pick up the items. WOW! My phone started ringing and I was pleasantly encouraged by all of the folks wanting to donate. Take a look at the video below. I challenge you to think of ways you can help and support local charities.
