A 'calabash' is a gourd historically used for carrying water in many parts of the world. The poster art will be accompanied by Calabash at the Carrack, the first of the Calabash events led by Jamie B. Designing and Applying a Personal Logo Using Adobe Illustrator
In this course students will create a personal logo and business card using Adobe Illustrator. The course will include basic skills building within Illustrator. This process will take the student from a sketch on paper to a finished digital logo that is ready for real life application. Jambalaya Soul Slam
The Jambalaya Soul Slam is a monthly individual poetry competition. Each competition consists of 12 poets. The top 3 poets earn a cash prize. The winner earns an invitation to the Grand Slam Finals in April to compete for a spot on the 2012 Bull City Slam Team (BCST). The BCST competes annually in regional and national slam competitions. In July, instead of an individual competition, the BCST competes against other NC poetry slam teams to raise money for each team. Admission $7.

"Fragments From Another Life" Photography Exhibit
Rhonda Klevansky, a South African photographer, writer and documentary filmmaker, illustrates the plight of political asylum seekers. Klevansky’s portraits, taken between 2000 and 2002, feature refugees holding personal items from their home countries, such as vases, books of poetry and music boxes to traditional clothing. The photographs include handwritten annotations detailing the subject’s personal connection to the items. FREE and open to the public.

"Soul Souvenirs: Durham's Musical Memories from the 1960s and 1970s" Art Exhibit
The official gallery exhibit for the Bull City Soul Revival, a locally-based humanities project seeking to recover Durham's rich heritage of soul, funk and R&B music. Yet "Soul Souvenirs" is not only about music. The exhibit will also touch on radio and television, record stores and night clubs, local high schools and churches, and even the civil rights and black power movements of the era. In short, this exhibit tells the story of Durham's African American community in the 1960s and 1970s. FREE admission.

Three solo shows: Sixteen Slices of Love by Peter Filene will be on view in the Allenton Gallery. The Salvage Series by Marty Edmunds and Transluclandia by Darryl Halbrooks will be showing in the Semans Gallery. The exhibits are part of the Durham Arts Council's year round exhibit program. Quilts Exhibition by Christine Hager-Braun
Looking Closely: Art Quilts by Christine Hager-Braun, will be shown in the Durham Arts Council’s Ella Fountain Pratt Legacy Gallery. Christine Hager-Braun is a two-time Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Grant Recipient (2007-2008 and 2011-2012). Her abstract art quilts and fabric compositions often explore emotions, their effect on individuals and their influence on relationships. In addition, she finds artistic inspiration in nature.

"Maji Moto: Dispatches from a Drought" Photography Exhibit
Photographs and lyrical essays Courtney Fitzpatrick, who spent 17 months in the remote Amboseli basin of Kenya during 2009 and 2010. As Amboseli descended into, suffered from, and eventually emerged from the worst drought in living memory, her evocative writing and photographs became a personal record of a fragile ecosystem. The limited edition book produced from these records will be part of the exhibit. FREE admission.

"That Was Then" Art Exhibit
That Was Then reunites George Jenne, a Rhode Island School of Design faculty member and current UNC-Chapel Hill Teaching Fellow, with his early mentor Paul Hrusovsky, the well-known Triangle artist and arts advocate.
