This time of year people flock to the Mountains of NC which is a 3 hour drive, but what most don't realize is how beautiful the scenery is right in our backyards of North Durham. Follow us on a beautiful journey through one of Durham's best kept secrets. We began by driving north on 501 (Roxboro Rd), passing Little River Reservoir, Quail Roost Farm, Red Mountain-just to name a few of the remarkable sites, continued north, crossed over the Person County line, drove to the 1st stop light, turned right onto Helena Moriah Rd for several miles, turned right onto Moore's Mill Rd, came back into Durham County and watched as the road curved along side the Flat River-the sound of the rushing water and the beautiful tree colors are amazing. Moore's Mill Road ends at 501, go straight across into Quail Roost Farms for an incredible scene of horses running through the pastures with the backdrop of colorful trees. Back to the stoplight at 501, turn right, take the 2nd right onto South Lowell Road (adjacent from Black Horse Run) and enjoy another scenic drive of hills, horses, farms, and the majestic countryside. South Lowell Rd will end at Guess Rd, take a left and that will bring you back to I-85 or Downtown Durham. Take along a picnic basket and stop along the Flat River and enjoy the majestic beauty thats right here in North Durham.
